Albany Kennel Club – Canine Good Citizen Program
Presenters: Jeannette O’Hanlon and her dog, “Ranger”

Started in 1989, the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program is a two-part certification program designed to reward dogs that have good manners at home and in the community. The program stresses responsible pet ownership for owners and basic good manners for dogs. All dogs that pass the ten-step CGC test are eligible to receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club.

This presentation will explore the issue of animal hoarding, a complex problem being encountered with alarming frequency by law enforcement, social services, and pet professionals. The typical animal hoarder is often considered to be a well-intentioned individual with an overwhelming desire to rescue animals. In fact, such a person’s inability to recognize his/her own limitations are likely to be rooted in serious, but not generally understood psychological problems.
Preparing for Disasters with Your Pet

Agility: The Basic Steps

Dental Awareness – Getting to the Root of the Problem

Patricia will talk about periodontal disease, the #1 diagnosed problem in cats and dogs. She will explain how you can prevent dental disease by providing good oral care for your pets at home.

With the expert help of her Delta Society therapy dogs, “Fauna” and “Clayton,” Greer will ask: “Would you prefer to read to your teacher
or to a therapy dog?” From a child who is hesitant to read out loud to
children with extreme disabilities, therapy animals and their trained
handlers are helping in many ways. This is a talk on how therapy
animals are making the lives of children better.

Kelly will also talk about the responsibility of pet ownership and some
of the issues people should be aware of before bringing a pet into
their homes. She will conclude her remarks with the importance
of adoption and its benefits to people and pets.

How Fighting Animal Cruelty Saves Human Lives and Suffering
Presenter: Dr. Harold J. Hovel, Board Member, NYS Humane Association

Studies of major violent crimes, from aggravated assault to rape and sexual homicide, domestic violence, child and elder abuse, and serial
killers, show a strong correlation to animal cruelty. Fighting animal
cruelty can prevent future violent crime, intervene to change the downward spiral of those in danger of committing such crimes, and
help in a major way to identify the most likely suspects.
